Industry Standard Update 111: Approved Document L: Conservation of fuel and power – Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings

Date issued: 6 May 2022

Introduction

In April 2022, an updated version of the Building Regulations Approved Document L series was released. Previously these were separated into L1A(1), L1B(2), L2A(3) and L2B(4), but now there are just two: Volume 1: Dwellings(5) and Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings(6). These approved documents cover England only. The new Building Regulations Approved Document L Volume 1 and Volume 2 came into effect on 15 June 2022.  This ISU covers Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings.

General

Legislation, normative references and current standards have been updated throughout where necessary.

Scope

The new Approved Document Volume 2 covers buildings other than dwellings. It also covers communal areas of buildings other than dwellings but containing dwellings, such as communal areas in a block of flats.

Most of the new information is contained in Sections 5 and 6 and covers the need to limit heat loss through building services. Tables 4.4 and 4.5 give guidance to the minimum insulation requirements for hot water and heating pipework.

There is also the requirement to size any new or fully replaced wet heating systems to be able to work effectively at a flow temperature of 55°C or lower.
