Safety reminder on LPG cylinders as temperatures drop

Liquid Gas UK has issued a seasonal safety reminder urging households to use the correct LPG cylinders for indoor heating as cooler autumn weather closes in.

Propane and butane are both widely used, but the trade body warns that they’re not interchangeable when it comes to indoor use. Propane must only be used outdoors due to fire and air quality risks, while butane can be used indoors with portable heaters or in caravans – provided ventilation and manufacturer guidelines are followed.

George Webb, Chief Executive of Liquid Gas UK, said: “Knowing which cylinder to use and following proper safety guidelines is crucial to keeping families safe and warm this season.”

Propane must be used outdoors only. Using and storing propane cylinders indoors can cause significant safety risks, such as the possibility of fire hazards or explosions, and can contribute to poor air quality.

Butane, on the other hand, is safer for use indoors with portable heaters, or appliances within caravans, which are specifically designed to house the cylinders.

Cylinders are often colour coded – orange for propane and blue for butane – but Webb cautioned users to always check the label rather than rely on colour alone.
