Industry Standard Update 081

BS 8499: 2017 Specification for domestic gas meter boxes and meter bracket. Date issued: April 2018

This Industry Standard Update provides an overview of the recently published revised Industry Standard BS 8499: 2017 Specification for domestic gas meter boxes and bracket, and highlights areas of significant change that the amendments have introduced.

Introduction

During December 2017, the British Standards Institution (BSI) published a revision to BS 8499: 2017 Specification for domestic meter boxes and meter bracket(1). This revised British Standard supersedes BS 8499: 2009 Specification for domestic meter boxes and meter bracket(2), which is withdrawn.

The revision to this standard comes into effect immediately.

General

BS 8499: 2017 Specification for domestic meter boxes and meter bracket specifies requirements for gas meter boxes for use with single gas meter installations conforming to BS 6400(3), as well as requirements for the design of the standard meter bracket. The layout remains as the same as the previous version.

Meter box spigots

Originally written to limit the disparities in meter box design, the standard has been updated to bring in changed spigot dimensions.

These will now suit the more variable needs of buildings that are retrofitted with external thermal cladding, as well as new-builds, where wall thickness and thermal fillings are now up to 250mm.

Figure 1 shows the revised dimensions for meter box spigots.

Summary

As previously stated, this Industry Standard Update is only a brief overview of the information contained in the revised standard. Registered businesses should be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are fully apprised of all the requirements of the whole published standard and their practical application.
