Check if you need to send HMRC a self assessment tax return
You must register for self-assessment (SA) and file a tax return if, in the tax year 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023, you were:
• Self-employed as a sole trader and earned more than £1,000
• A partner in a business partnership
• A director of a limited company.
When to file your online SA return and pay any tax you owe
You need to file your return by 31 January 2024. But filing your return now means you can find out how much you owe, and help you budget and plan for your payment. And if you’re due a refund, you can claim it back sooner.
If you don’t register for SA, file a tax return and pay any tax you owe on time, HMRC may charge you penalties and interest.
