Tool theft still hitting UK trades hard, Tempcover survey reveals

Tool theft continues to disrupt the livelihoods of UK tradespeople, with new research from temporary business van insurance specialists, Tempcover, highlighting the scale and cost of the problem.

In a survey of 500 tradespeople, 72% said they had experienced tool theft, and more than a quarter (27%) had been targeted multiple times. The financial impact is significant: respondents reported an average replacement cost of £3,092.

Despite 88% of tradespeople being concerned about tool theft, the findings reveal that more than a quarter (28%) still store their tools in a locked vehicle overnight. The survey also shows a mixed approach to tool storage. 53% keep tools in a locked garage or workshop, 41% store them at home, and 22% keep them onsite on site.

Insurance gaps add further risk. While 27% hold a dedicated tool insurance policy, and 22% are covered through van or their home contents insurance, 18% of tradespeople have no insurance at all, meaning a single theft could result in a substantial personal loss.

“Our research highlights that while most tradespeople are concerned about tool theft, many are still leaving themselves exposed. Whether it’s your own van, a company vehicle, or a borrowed van with temporary insurance, leaving tools unattended or overnight can put them at risk, and potentially invalidate an insurance claim. Simple measures like taking tools inside, using lockable toolboxes, keeping a detailed inventory, and marking equipment, can make a real difference. Planning ahead and taking these precautions doesn’t just protect your tools; it can also help prevent costly delays and financial loss.” Claire Wills-Mckissick, temporary business van insurance expert at Tempcover.
