Baxi donates heating and hot water system for DIY SOS family home

Baxi has donated a boiler, cylinder and system design expertise to help transform a family home on BBC One’s DIY SOS.

The episode, “Bringing Dan Home”, followed the adaptation of a house in Freckleton, near Preston, for 17-year-old Daniel. Daniel was diagnosed with brain cancer at 13 and spent three years in hospital because his family’s home couldn’t meet his needs.

Hot water was a key part of the brief. Daniel needs a wet room and several showers throughout the day, so the system had to deliver enough stored hot water and fast recovery to keep up.

Baxi’s in-house design team gave their time to carry out a feasibility survey of the property. A heat pump was considered but ruled out because the building fabric wasn’t suitable. Instead, the team specified a Baxi 600 System 2 18kW boiler with a Megaflo Eco SystemReady 250-litre cylinder, both donated by Baxi. Danfoss donated the heating controls and thermostatic radiator valves.

Barney Wharton-Jones, national sales Manager, and Chris Perkins, field team manager, used their company volunteering day to support the local installers fitting the system, and helped with other jobs around the house and garden.

Barney said: “We are incredibly proud to be able to support this project which was instrumental in bringing Dan home and reuniting his family. It was a humbling experience that opened our eyes to the challenges some people face.”
