Vaillant and YMCA Derbyshire inspire young people through engineering education

Vaillant has expanded its partnership with YMCA Derbyshire to launch a new educational initiative aimed at opening up engineering and heating industry careers to young people at risk of homelessness and social exclusion, and communities most in need.

Building on its Growing Communities programme, the manufacturer has supported YMCA projects throughout 2025 ranging from donating money to Padley@YMCA Derbyshire Community Hub’s running costs, giving technical heating support and helped with a variety of gardening projects across the region.

The volunteering projects have also brought a wide range of Vaillant employees together, including its newest cohort of Low Carbon Technician Apprentices, who formed part of the gardening team that helped clear and transform communal garden areas around Belper and Derby.

Eight students from YMCA Key college took part in the week-long programme, Launch into Engineering, which combined Vaillant’s industry expertise with the Derby Museum of Making’s STEAM learning approach. Participants built their own screwdrivers and explored the wide range of roles available at Vaillant.

“By connecting learners with local employers like Vaillant, we’re bridging the gap between education and employment while fostering a sense of community and possibility. These experiences are essential for helping young people overcome barriers and take meaningful steps toward their future,” said Gillian Sewell, CEO at YMCA Derbyshire.
