Industry Standard Update 135

Gas Safety (Installation and Use) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2026

Date issued: 16 October 2026

This Industry Standard Update provides an overview of the recently published amendments to the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 and highlights areas of significant change that the revision has introduced.

Introduction

During October 2026, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) published an amendment to the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004(1) (GSIUR NI). Gas Safety (Installation and Use) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2026(2) contains a number of amendments to GSIUR NI.

The amendments come into effect immediately.

Scope

A number of exclusions have been added to those types of installation that fall outside the scope of the GSIUR NI in Regulation 2 (4)(2). These exclusions are:

(g) installations downstream of an isolation valve which

(i) form a system exclusively for the compression of gas;

(ii) are primarily used to supply compressed gas to vehicles; and

(iii) incorporate at least one gas compressor which has an electronic motor input power rating exceeding 5kW

Gas appliances

In Regulation 26 (9) (gas appliances – safety precautions), sub-paragraph (ca) so that where it is not practicable to check the heat input or operating pressure, you should examine the appliance combustion performance.

Landlords’ duties

The Regulation regarding landlords’ duties in the matters of gas safety, Regulation 36A, has been added, utilising an MOT-style renewal date. This means that where a landlords’ gas safety record (LGSR) is carried out within two months of the renewal date of the previous LGSR, then the renewal date can be carried over.

So, for instance, if an LGSR has a renewal date of 1 April 2027, then an LGSR can be carried out any time from the 1 February 2027, and the renewal date for the next LGSR will be 1 April 2028. There can be no overrun of the date.

Summary

This Industry Standard Update is only a brief overview of the information contained in the amended regulations. Registered businesses should be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are fully apprised of all the requirements of the whole published Regulation and its practical application.
