What’s involved in a Virtual Inspection Event and how to prepare

Virtual Inspection Event (VIEs) are carried out online, hosted by a specially trained team of advisors and technical officers. They incorporate a pre-assessment training and an online knowledge-based technical assessment that is based on the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (IGEM/G11).

You will also receive additional information with your VIE invitation that answers some frequently asked questions about virtual inspections. But here are some tips to help make sure it goes smoothly.

• Make sure you complete the assessment in a quiet environment with a reliable internet connection. 
• Using a laptop, PC or Mac with a working webcam and microphone. While tablets and mobile devices may be used, some devices may not be fully compatible with the process and older operating systems may experience technical issues.
• Before your appointment, make sure you’ve disabled any pop-ups.
• During the event, stay connected and follow the instructions provided by the host. Interruptions caused by technical issues, loss of connectivity or failure to complete the assessment process correctly may prevent the inspection from being completed successfully and could mean it needs to be rescheduled.

If your business receives a Virtual Inspection Event nomination request, you only need to tell the Register which engineer will take part by the deadline shown in the email. The inspection itself does not need to be completed by that date.

To nominate an engineer, log in to your Gas Safe Register online account, look for the yellow Virtual Inspection alert, select the nomination link and enter the engineer’s current email address. Once those details have been submitted, your part of the nomination process is complete.

The nominated engineer will then receive an email from no_reply@tessello.co.uk with instructions on how to access their account, complete the pre-learning and book an available event. Please ask them to use the invitation link promptly and to check their junk or spam folder if the email does not arrive.

Virtual Inspection Events form part of the Register’s inspection activity under Section 4 of the Register Rules of Registration. If the event is not booked or attended, this may delay completion of the inspection process and could affect the business’s registration until it has been arranged and completed.
