Daikin brings STEM to life for Birmingham pupils

Daikin has opened the doors of its Birmingham Training Academy to 45 Year 5 pupils from Meadow Green Primary School in Wythall, giving them a hands‑on introduction to explore science and engineering outside the classroom. The visit this month formed part of Daikin’s wider commitment to support education and strengthen links between local schools and employers.

During the visit, pupils took part in interactive activities covering electricity, pressure, temperature, airflow and heat transfer. They built electrical circuits, used equipment including multimeters and infrared cameras, and explored how heat pumps and air conditioning systems work.

A virtual reality demonstration let the pupils experience a heat pump installation and see how technical knowledge is applied in practice. Questions and quizzes helped the children consolidate their learning throughout the morning.

Teachers reported that the day boosted pupils’ confidence and curiosity, with children particularly enjoying experiments showing how changes in pressure can make things hotter or colder. Daikin staff from across the business supported the sessions, sharing their technical knowledge and acting as role models to highlight future careers in engineering and low‑carbon heating.

The visit follows the success of Daikin’s first Birmingham school STEM event in 2025. Meadow Green Primary School returned for a second year after positive feedback from pupils and teachers. Daikin hopes that by offering practical, enjoyable STEM experiences at primary level, more young people will see engineering and green technologies as realistic and exciting career options.
