Yorkshire and the Humber keep Britain’s coolest homes

Yorkshire and the Humber continue to record the lowest indoor temperatures of any UK region, according to new analysis from smart heating company tado°. The study found that homes in the region average just 16.11°C indoors – nearly 2°C below the widely recommended 18°C benchmark.

Based on European Commission guidance, that gap equates to around 13.23% lower heating demand, saving households an estimated £183 per year compared with heating to 18°C. No other part of Britain runs cooler, with London emerging as the warmest region at 17.54°C

Across Europe, many countries heat homes to 20°C or above, suggesting the UK’s cooler indoor temperatures may now reflect longer term behavioural change rather than short term responses to energy price spikes.

The findings follow Ofgem’s latest energy price cap announcement, which has eased household bills but not necessarily shifted people’s heating habits.

“Even as prices fall, heating habits don’t change overnight,” said Christian Deilmann, CoFounder and Managing Director at tado°. “The focus should remain on staying warm efficiently, rather than simply increasing consumption when costs dip.”
