We’ve teamed up with Martindale Electric to give away a new TB118 kit to one lucky registered gas engineer. The TB118KIT1 combines easy-to-use tools for live voltage indication and earth loop verification, together with fused spur and MCB locking-off devices in a high-quality soft carry case.
Gas engineers need to be able to show that they have the knowledge and competence to isolate the electrical supply to a gas appliance safely. Gas Safe Register’s Technical Bulletin 118 provides details of test procedures to keep you safe from electrical hazards, including verification of mains earthing and the safe isolation of circuits, as well as demonstrating the effectiveness of the earthing for Class 1 equipment before carrying out any work.
Martindale Electric has also created a simplified version of the comprehensive electrical safe working process, using memorable acronym ALIVE:
Approved kit. Before starting, make sure your equipment meets all legal safety standards (BS EN61243-3).
Lock out. Identify the point of isolation, lock it off, and place warning tags on the equipment.
Initial prove. Test your voltage indicator against the proving unit to make sure it’s working properly.
Voltage test. Use your voltage indicator to confirm that there are no dangerous voltages in the circuit you are about to work on.
Ensure. Prove and re-test the voltage indicator against the proving unit to ensure it is working before you start working on the circuit.
