We’ve been contacted again by gas engineers who have been offered so-called maintenance contracts that cost them thousands of pounds but never lead to any work.
Here’s what they say: the company, often describing itself as a property maintenance firm, emails the gas engineer, offering a contract to provide landlords’ gas safety record checks and maintenance of gas appliances in a postcode area local to them.
The engineer is then asked for a fee to secure the ‘exclusive’ contract, usually around £2,000. However, the engineer never receives any work through the contract, and they then can’t get hold of the company to which they have paid their hard-earned money.
These companies pop up regularly, and change name frequently.
Action Fraud has some useful advice on avoiding fraud and scams, and says: “Be extremely wary of post, phone calls or emails offering you business deals out of the blue. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always question it.”
