Gas fitter fined for illegal gas work

A gas fitter has been fined after carrying out gas work when he was no longer Gas Safe registered.

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court heard how Kevin Shephard issued landlord gas safety records and carried out work on gas fittings at domestic properties between April 2016 and July 2017, continuing to work after his registration expired.

An HSE investigation found that Mr Shephard had been previously registered with Gas Safe during several periods between 27 November 2013 and 15 June 2016. His registration had lapsed on 15 June 2016 coinciding with the expiry of his gas competence qualifications.

Gas Safe Register contacted Mr Shephard regarding the expiry of his registration, but it was not renewed, resulting in him illegally carrying out the gas work.

Mr Kevin Shephard, of Edinburgh Drive, Huyton, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 3(3), 36(3)a and 36(3)c of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. He has been fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,000.

HSE inspector Jane Carroll said after the hearing: “Kevin Shephard undertook gas work which he knew he was not registered to do. All gas work must be done by registered Gas Safe engineers to ensure the highest standards are met to prevent injury and loss of life.”
